Flower Farms in New England

One reason I can’t ever imagine leaving New England is our astonishing change of seasons. I know, I know, easy to say when the apple blossoms are popping up. But I have treasured memories attached to each one of the four seasons. This stretch of bliss we’re in now? Spring and early summer awaken our instinctive connection to the earth, the rejuvenating of mind and body by turning over soil.

Tuesday morning I hopped in the car to pick up some fresh lilacs from one of my favorite farms in Essex, Aster B. A cruise down 1A through our heavenly countryside on the North Shore brought to bear just how breathtaking our Spring is. Melissa is just amazing to work with, and witnessing the farm stirring to life got me so excited for the bounty to come. Here are a few snaps from the journey:

In The Studio: Calligraphy

Although flowers are my passion, it’s not flowers all the time in the studio. I’m glad to look up and see a glorious mess after hours of drawing/painting/writing/sewing. It’s a sign of studio vitality.

I’ve developed a deep affection for the hand-written word. Our digital world is full of typing and tweets so I find it therapeutic to come back to calligraphy. It’s my meditation. The slow movement, the patience it requires and the connection to an ancient craft. Take the time and you will be rewarded.

These bell shaped babies get a lot of my Springtime love. They have so much personality in their shape and natural movement. Though some of the species contain poisonous alkaloids, in Chinese Medicine they are considered to have healing properties.

In The Studio: Spring Days

I found this article in the New York Times last week. As Verlyn Klinkenborg described the anticipation of Spring in the North East, I felt an immediate kinship with him. Oh how my heart skips a beat as I hear the birds chirping outside. I find myself waiting, impatiently, for the leaves to bud out, the streets to fill with green, the neighbors to start bustling in their yards, and the community full again. As I wait impatiently, here are some of my favorite Spring blooms. Hellebores and Solomon’s Seal.
